Asta is a nature guide, paddling instructor and Saimaa Geopark GeoGuide. She leads our nature experiences on land and water, sharing not only the beauty of Lake Saimaa but also its stories, history and unique geology.

Good food is an essential part of every visit. Our chef, Ilkka, is a D.O. Saimaa Chef whose cooking follows the rhythm of the seasons and celebrates the finest local ingredients. When he’s not in the kitchen, you’ll often find him fishing for tomorrow’s dinner or building something new from old materials.

For Asta, it all began with a growing desire to spend more time in nature. After years in sales, she chose a different path and trained as a nature guide.

Little by little, the pieces fell into place. A partner who shared the same dream and values. A floating eco-accommodation on Lake Saimaa. A shared home by the water. Eventually, Uhkua became much more than a business – it became part of who we are.

We believe we’re part of nature, not separate from it. Spending time outdoors reminds us of that, helping us slow down, appreciate biodiversity and make more thoughtful choices in everyday life. Through our experiences, we hope to share not only the beauty of Lake Saimaa but also the values that make it so special to us.

The history and traditions of this region are equally important. We love sharing stories that help visitors see Lake Saimaa through local eyes – from prehistoric rock paintings and ancient barley grains to the vendace that still thrives in Lake Saimaa’s exceptionally clean, even drinkable water. It’s often these small stories that make a place unforgettable.
